| $ ENERGY-SAVING TIPS $ | |
| T'STAT SETTING - Adjusting your thermostat setting repeatedly can waste a substantial amount of energy. Set your t'stat to a comfortable setting and leave it alone. Upgrading to a programmable thermostat will allow your more control, raising and lowering the temperature at preset times. As a result, you don't operate the equipment as much when you're sleeping or when the house is unoccupied. | |
| FREE ENERGY - During Summer months, keep blinds closed and try to have window treatments over large windows. Doing this will help block out the sun's rays, making your house easier to keep cool and keep your system from running so often. During winter months, pull back window treatments and open blinds to allow the sun to help warm your house naturally. Close curtains on the shady side of the house. Curtains made from heavy fabric can prevent cold air from seeping in and warm air from seeping out, which reduces your heating costs. | |
| DO AN ENERGY AUDIT OF YOUR HOUSE - Identify areas where heated air is leaking out. Check around doors, windows, fireplaces, and other areas that may feel drafty. Use caulk, weather stripping and other appropriate means to close off these leaks. If your house is poorly insulated, adding additional insulation will pay for itself in reduced heating costs. | |
| AIR DUCT LEAKS - First look for sections in your duct that should be joined but have separated. The unsealed ducts in your attic and crawl spaces lose air - uninsulated ducts lose heat, wasting energy and money. | |
|
A WHOLE-HOUSE FAN, OR ATTIC FAN is a simple and inexpensive method of cooling a house. The fan draws cool outdoor air inside through open windows and pulls hot air out of the house.
| AVOID EXCESS USE OF EXHAUST FANS. Excessive use of kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans will make your system work harder. This will increase energy consumption and costs. | |
| REPLACE OLD INEFFICIENT EQUIPMENT. If your heating equipment is more than ten years old, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends replacing it with a more energy-efficient furnace. Investing in Energy Star qualified equipment saves more energy and money in the long run. | |
| ROUTINE MAINTENANCE - Keep your heating and cooling equipment in top operating condition. Dirty filters reduce the efficiency of your system and Poorly tuned units use more fuel. Be sure to check out our Preventive Maintenance Agreements. | |
| WE'RE HERE WHEN YOU NEED US. But maybe you won't need us this time. | |
| CHECK YOUR FILTERS - If your filters are clogged, they can greatly reduce your system's performance. They can keep your system from coming on or cause your a/c to freeze up and blow warm air. If they are clogged, replace the filter immediately and give your system a few hours before turning back on (until it thaws). It is recommended that you replace your filter every 30 days. | |
| CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT - If your thermostat requires batteries, make sure that the batteries aren't weak or dead. Most battery-powered thermostats have a low battery icon on the display. Make sure thermostat is set properly. Push the 'Mode' button until it says HEAT or COOL, whichever you're trying to turn on, and push the up/down arrows to set it to a comfortable temperature. | |
| CHECK POWER SWITCH - Make sure that the power switch for the system is ON. It usually looks like a light switch and is located near the furnace. | |
|
CHECK YOUR BREAKERS - Make sure that your breakers have not tripped and are in the ON position. To reset, turn the breaker OFF, then back on. WARNING: If a breaker keeps tripping, you should contact a qualified technician to inspect your system to determine why you are having problems.
|
NO HEAT? - If you have a gas heating system, be sure to contact your local gas provider to see if your service has been interrupted. If you have a heat pump system, turn your thermostat to Emergency Heat. This will cause your heat strips to come on and get you through until a technician can come out.
| WATER LEAK - If you are experiencing a water leak due to your HVAC system, please cut the system off until a technician can come out. As long as the system is running, it will continue to produce water, causing further damage to your home. | |
| UNCOMFORTABLE IN CERTAIN ROOMS? - If you're uncomfortable in a few rooms, you may need to have your dampers. The dampers direct the flow of air through your home and, if not properly adjusted, can leave parts of your home too hot or too cold. Damper Adjustment Instructions If this adjustment still leaves you uncomfortable or you have an older home, you may want to think about investing in a zone system. | |
