Your HVAC Thermostat's HOLD feature

HVAC thermostats

An HVAC thermostat that functions properly is key to keeping your home comfortable. Programmable smart thermostats have been an HVAC industry game-changer. They enable you to program temperature settings for different times of day based on your family's schedule. A smart thermostat is a WI-FI enabled device that automatically adjusts heating and cooling temperature settings in your home for optimal performance.

But what happens when there's a change of plans? An unexpected houseguest? A last minute weekend getaway?

What Does HOLD Mean on My HVAC Thermostat?

While programmable thermostats allow you to create a temperature schedule for your home, there are situations where you may need to break the pattern and suspend your normal thermostat schedule. With the hold button, there's no need to reconfigure your settings, the hold function is a built-in feature that allows you to override your schedule.

By activating the HOLD function, your thermostat will allow you to manually control the temperature. There are two kinds of hold settings:

  • The permanent hold option let's you manually set the temperature for an indefinite amount of time, overriding your programmed schedule completely.

  • On the other hand, the temporary hold keeps the new temperature for a predetermined amount of time (usually until the next program period). Some models may have a "Hold Until" option that allows you to choose when it should resume resume your regular schedule thereafter.

In order to cancel the hold setting, simply press Cancel, Run, Remove Hold, or Run Schedule to set the thermostat back to its normal schedule. Exactly how to use this feature will vary depending on your particular model.
